I Could Have Been an Accountant

I could have been an accountant. But my heart pulled me into the arts, where I take pleasure in the process of creating things and making them beautiful.

I used to aspire to become a CPA. However, when I was accepted as a writer in our college publication, I realized my heart’s true calling – I wanted to work in the creative field. It was right there all along, I just didn’t acknowledge it at first.

Before the first semester ended on my first year as a BS Accountancy (USJ-R) student, I planned to shift to a Bachelor of Arts program. I didn’t, not even once, study for the final accounting examination because I was dead set on shifting the next semester. To my surprise, I still passed the final accounting exam and could have proceeded without a hitch.

However, I no longer wanted to become a CPA.

I pursued the new program I chose under the Arts and Sciences, became good at it, and graduated top 2 of the program’s batch.

Had I not enrolled in Accountancy I wouldn’t have discovered what was really meant for me.

I learned that you should leave yourself open to any possibility even while pursuing what you may think is the only thing that will make you happy. Life is full of options, so don’t close yourself off to a single goal. The truth is, life doesn’t always follow the script we thought it would when we were young.

I quit chasing a childhood dream I knew wasn’t making me happy anymore. It felt liberating. I stopped wasting time following a dream I thought I wanted and started becoming what I was meant to be.

For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and, if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start over again. ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
